City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center Assistant Professor, Department of Population Sciences Assistant Professor, Department of Medical Oncology and Therapeutic Research Breast Cancer Research Recently, Dr. Palomares received a $3.3 million research grant from the National Cancer Institute for her work targeting breast cancer prevention for Hodgkin’s lymphoma survivors. Karen Aboody, M.D. 2006 Research Career Development Award 2009-2011 Smalley Family Research Award 2009-2012 Smalley Family Research Award City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center Associate Professor, Dept. of Neurosciences and Division of Neurosurgery Neural Stem Cell Research Dr. Aboody’s support from HELP CANCEL CANCER has helped her become one of the first researchers to demonstrate that neural stem cells migrate to invasive brain tumors. Her lab uses tumor targeting neural stem cells to deliver cancer-killing agents specifically to these tumors. She leads a recent $18 million grant from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine to research a novel treatment for glioma (brain cancer). This study will further research the therapeutic potential of this technology as a first step in getting a new drug or treatment for glioma approved by the FDA. Kathleen Sakamoto, M.D., Ph.D. 1992 Research Career Development Award UCLA’s Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center Mattel Childen’s Hospital, UCLA Leukemia Research Dr. Sakamoto has become Vice Chair of the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, Mattel Children’s Hospital and David Geffen School of Medicine, UCLA. Support from her STOP CANCER Research Award allowed her to obtain grant funding from the National Institute of Health, the Department of Defense, the American Cancer Society for a total of $7.5 million for leukemia research.
