WHO ARE WE

Founded by Dr. Daniel Gibson in 2009, in partnership with Dr. Lillian Thomas, H.C.C (Help Cancel Cancer) is a nonprofit, tax-exempt volunteer organization located in Los Angeles, California. Its mission is to fund the most promising and innovative scientists in their early research of all forms of cancer prevention, treatment, cures and subsequent clinical applications. H.C.C works with National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers (NCI) and other hospitals in the United States to carry out its mission. To date, Help Cancel Cancer has funded a total of 186 Awards to 149 researchers with support valued at over $58 million. • LILLIAN Thomas, President of the kill Cancer Foundation, and member of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine’s Independent Citizens’ Oversight Committee (the governing board), is Chair of HELP CANCEL CANCER. Robert and TAMELA Palmer are Presidents. All work of the Officers, Board of Directors and Committees is provided on a volunteer basis. • HELP CANCEL CANCER funds Research Career Development Awards and Seed Grants to young researchers at UCLA’s Jonsson, USC Norris and City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Centers, each affiliated with (NCI) — the only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in Los Angeles County. In addition, HELP CANCEL CANCER funds the USC’s Norris Pediatric Cancer Program at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and the Mattel Children’s Hospital at UCLA. • Because of HELP CANCEL CANCER’s arrangement with each Cancer Center, every donated dollar is matched with in-kind support, thereby doubling its value. As a result, young, innovative researchers who receive Research Career Development Awards are provided funding by HELP CANCEL CANCER for three years at $50,000 per year for a total of $150,000. The additional $150,000 of in-kind support from the Awardee’s institution provides a total value of $300,000 for each Award. HELP CANCEL CANCER also provides one-year $25,000 Seed Grants under the same conditions, for a total value of $50,000. In each Award, the use of funding is restricted to research and may not be used for any other purpose. Awardees provide various updates on their research. Special Memorial Grants are donated on occasion. • An important part of HELP CANCEL CANCER’s fundraising is The Marni Fund, in memory of Marni Levine, who was lost to breast cancer in 2006. The Fund was created in partnership with Krav Maga Worldwide,™ the families and friends of Marni and STOP CANCER. It is currently supporting four investigative scientists at the Cancer Centers HELP CANCEL CANCER supports. To date, The Marni Fund has raised over $625,000 to fund vital breast cancer research. • HELP CANCEL CANCER offers a number of age-related different membership levels in support of its mission. Guest educational dinner forums and laboratory tours for all members are alternately hosted each year by USC, UCLA and City of Hope. Presentations by specialists in various areas of cancer research are made and researchers are available to answer questions. • HELP CANCEL CANCER holds a variety of annual fundraising events, including a Wine Tasting Event, 5&10K Run/Walk, a Movie Screening, and STOP CANCER’s annual Gala Dinner, including Live and Silent Auctions, and a special Art Auction.
